Total Definer Liposculpture vs. Traditional Liposuction: Creating High-Definition Abs and Athletic Curves

You can spend five days a week in the gym, track every macro and still not get the muscle definition you want. The obliques are there, but you don’t quite have that V cut yet. And in certain lighting, a six-pack is visible, but it doesn’t “pop.” If all your effort is hidden beneath a stubborn layer of fat that won’t budge, high-definition liposculpture can help you achieve your goals.

More people are turning to liposuction to enhance their contours, particularly after weight loss and other lifestyle changes. Back in 2022, liposuction overtook breast augmentation as the most performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the U.S, and it claimed the title again in 2025, according to the most recent Annual Plastic Surgery Statistics report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

But most of that is traditional liposuction, which does one thing well: it removes fat. What it doesn't do is sculpt. For patients wanting enhanced muscle definition, we use HD liposculpture to etch, chisel and refine your anatomy. Total Definer at PURE takes HD liposculpture even further with a fully loaded package that includes everything you need to achieve that enhanced natural athletic look, from VASER Lipo 360 to fat transfer and skin tightening.

What Is Total Definer Liposculpture?

Total Definer Liposculpture is PURE's signature approach to high-definition body contouring. It's HD liposculpture with nothing left out.

The core of the procedure package is VASER-assisted liposculpture of the entire trunk: abdomen, flanks, waist and back, with the option to extend into the arms, chest, chin, thighs, and axillary area at no extra cost. From there, the package layers in everything that affects the final result.

Fat transfer sends harvested cells to the hips and buttocks for women or to muscle groups like the delts, pecs and biceps for men.

Skin-tightening technologies like BodyTite (or Renuvion) and Morpheus8 address skin quality at two different depths, helping the skin contract around the newly sculpted contours.

Cell Saver recycles your own red blood cells during surgery, reducing blood loss.

“The name, ‘Total Definer,’ reflects what the surgery is designed to do, and how it’s delivered,” explains PURE’s founder, Dr. S. Alexander Earle. “It totally redefines the body to give you a more athletic shape, and it’s the total package, built for patients who don’t want to piece together a surgical plan from six different line items.”

How Does It Differ From Traditional Liposuction?

Traditional liposuction is a surgical fat-reduction procedure.

A cannula is inserted beneath the skin through small incisions, and unwanted fat is suctioned out. The technology can be manual, power-assisted (using a vibrating cannula like the MicroAire) or ultrasound-assisted, but the objective stays the same: less fat, smoother contours.

“It's effective for what it does, but it reduces volume without redesigning proportions,” says Dr. Earle. There's no etching, no muscle definition work, no fat transfer to build curves or bulk. And skin tightening, if offered at all, is typically a separate charge and a separate conversation.

Here is a side-by-side look at how they compare.

How Does HD Sculpting Differ for Men & Women?

For women, HD sculpting at PURE produces what Dr. Earle calls a "soft etch." You'll see defined rectus muscles down the center of the abdomen and subtle line work along the obliques, but not individual six-pack squares. Think Pilates-studio definition rather than bodybuilder abs. Many women pair the abdominal work with fat transfer to the hips or buttocks to create a curvy hourglass silhouette, or with rib remodeling to snatch the waist even further.

Men typically want more aggressive sculpting to maximize muscle definition. The full six-pack gets etched out, plus the obliques, creating a strong taper and a sharper V cut along the lower abdomen. The chest, deltoids, biceps, triceps, latissimus and trapezius muscles can also be enhanced with fat transfer for extra volume and bulk.

“Interestingly, long-term observation suggests that muscles may actually respond better to gym work after fat transfer, possibly due to stem cells and other components,” says Dr. Earle.

So, Can Liposuction Really Give You Abs?

Yes, but only the right kind of liposuction.

Traditional liposuction changes size, not shape. As Dr. Earle puts it: “If you have a square shape and you just do straight lipo, you go from a bigger square to a smaller square. That doesn’t really help anyone.”

HD liposculpture takes a different approach, using ultrasound energy to melt fat cells and give your surgeon the precision needed to highlight your natural muscle definition. At PURE, the tool of choice for ab etching, male chest contouring and oblique sculpting is VASER, which has the added benefit of reducing blood loss and promoting a moderate degree of skin retraction.

“Traditional lipo reduces volume,” says Dr. Earle. “HD liposculpture reveals anatomy.”

So, can liposuction really give you abs? Yes, with strategic and extremely precise fat removal that not only highlights your existing muscle definition, but also creates little grooves or valleys along the boundaries of your abdominal muscles that make them look even more defined.

Why Advanced Techniques Require Advanced Expertise

A lot of surgeons talk about what liposuction takes away. Fewer talk about what gets left behind. And with HD liposculpture, what gets left behind helps define your final result.

To sculpt athletic contours, surgeons leave a thin layer of fat directly over each muscle group while aggressively removing the fat in the spaces between them. That contrast is what creates the three-dimensional look of definition. “It's a controlled illusion,” says Dr. Earle. “You have to vary your depth and technique across the entire abdomen to achieve it.”

Dr. Earle retains about 1 centimeter of fat beneath the skin for optimal safety and results. “You want to hit that sweet spot,” he says. Leave too much fat behind, and the definition doesn’t come through. Take too much, and you risk what’s called a lipo burn, where reduced blood flow in the skin causes tissue damage.

The margin for error is slim, which is why HD sculpting demands a different level of experience and anatomical understanding than standard liposuction.

Does Total Definer Liposculpture Require More Maintenance Than Traditional Lipo?

It does, and there's a specific anatomical reason for that.

After traditional liposuction, fat is removed more or less evenly across the treatment area. If a patient gains weight later, the remaining fat cells enlarge, but they do so relatively uniformly. The contour softens. It doesn't distort.

But to create visible definition with HD liposculpture, fat is removed strategically around the natural borders and contours of the underlying muscles. The finished result depends on contrast, so if your weight increases later, those carefully sculpted transitions can start to soften and blur.

“Fat that’s removed with any type of liposuction is technically gone for good,” says Dr. Earle, “but the surrounding areas still expand with weight gain. So those sharp, athletic lines we just created? Poof, gone. Unless you maintain them with diet and exercise.”

That doesn’t mean you have to live at the gym or start skipping meals, but Total Definer liposculpture is less forgiving than traditional lipo when it comes to weight fluctuations. Consistent nutrition and exercise help preserve the athletic look, and continued strength training can make an already-defined result look even better as your physique develops.

Who Is Total Definer Designed For?

The Total Definer Package caters to the patient who wants comprehensive results and a seamless, hassle-free experience. “It comes with everything you need for your transformation,” says Dr. Earle. “Your procedures. Your hotel stay. Transportation to and from your appointments. Post-op care. You name it, we thought of it, and we included it in this package.”

Total Definer works with your existing foundation, so ideal candidates should have a BMI between 20 and 25, relatively good skin quality and an existing relationship with the gym. It’s designed for men and women who are in reasonable shape but haven’t been able to achieve the visible definition they want through diet and exercise alone.

None of this means a patient who's outside the ideal range today can't get there. Many patients who aren't candidates right now become candidates after bringing their BMI into range with weight loss or having a tummy tuck first. The goal is the right procedure at the right time.

Ready to Transform Your Contours?

The Total Definer Package with HD Liposculpture is designed for patients who have already put in the work and want their results to show it. By combining high-definition liposculpture, fat transfer and skin tightening, Dr. Earle can refine the contours you already have and create a more athletic, defined shape from every angle.
