Achieve a contoured abdomen

You shouldn’t have to plan your wardrobe around loose abdominal skin.

If you’re tired of high-waisted leggings and shapewear, a tummy tuck can restore smoother, firmer contours and help you feel more confident in any clothing style. Also called abdominoplasty, this procedure addresses the changes that diet and exercise cannot fix after pregnancy or weight loss.

At PURE Plastic Surgery, abdominoplasty is performed by three double-board-certified surgeons and guided by our Smart Aesthetics™ philosophy: that the best results come from procedures that are planned around your anatomy and proportions, not a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

What Are the Different Types of Tummy Tucks?

PURE Plastic Surgery offers a full range of abdominoplasty techniques, including the mini, full, extended, fleur-de-lis, drainless and Smart Tuck variations. The right approach depends on the amount of excess skin being removed, whether your abdominal muscles need repair, and how far your contouring needs extend beyond the front of the abdomen. For all tummy tucks except the mini, we include flank liposuction to avoid the “boxy” shape that often comes from pulling the tissues down without contouring the sides.

Mini Tummy Tuck

What Is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A mini tummy tuck addresses loose skin below the belly button and uses a shorter incision than a full abdominoplasty. It doesn’t involve muscle repair and is designed for patients with mild lower abdominal laxity and a relatively flat upper belly. Usually, only specific patients are candidates for a mini tummy tuck, such as those with a small amount of skin remaining after a C-section.

Full (Standard) Tummy Tuck

What Is a Full Tummy Tuck?

A full tummy tuck is the most common version of abdominoplasty and addresses the entire midsection. It tightens loose skin above and below the belly button, repairs separated abdominal muscles and repositions the navel through a new opening in the tightened skin. Patients with diastasis recti after pregnancy, generalized skin laxity and a lower belly pooch are usually best served by a full tummy tuck.

Extended Tummy Tuck

What Is an Extended Tummy Tuck?

An extended tummy tuck removes extra skin from the entire abdominal area and extends laterally to the hips, flanks and part of your lower back. The abdominal muscles are also tightened. The incision will be longer than other options, and the recovery can take up to six weeks, but the tradeoff is more comprehensive improvement across the abdomen, flanks and lower torso.

Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck

What Is a Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck?

A fleur-de-lis tummy tuck adds a vertical incision to the horizontal one, allowing your surgeon to remove loose skin from side to side, not just top to bottom. This technique is generally reserved for patients with significant skin laxity following massive weight loss, where horizontal tightening alone would leave folds in the upper belly.

Drainless Tummy Tuck

What Is a Reverse Tummy Tuck?

The reverse tummy tuck is for patients with extra skin in the upper abdomen, between the breasts and the belly button. Instead of pulling the skin down, like with traditional abdominoplasty, a reverse tummy tuck pulls the skin upward and hides the incision along the natural crease beneath the breasts. No muscle repair is involved.

Drainless Tummy Tuck

What Is a Drainless Tummy Tuck?

A drainless tummy tuck is an advanced approach that uses progressive tension sutures to close the space between the skin and the muscle, eliminating the need for post-op drains. Dr. Garrett Wegerif is PURE's drainless tummy tuck specialist and one of the few surgeons in Miami performing this technique. “It lets patients skip the drain care routine and recover more comfortably,” Dr. Wegerif explains.

Types of Tummy Tucks at PURE Plastic Surgery

Type Best For Muscle Repair? Incision Pattern Key Difference
Mini Mild loose skin below the belly button with a relatively flat upper abdomen Skin only Shorter low abdominal incision Treats a limited area of lower abdominal laxity, but does not address the full abdominal wall
Full Loose skin above and below the belly button, lower belly bulge and diastasis recti Muscle repair included Low hip-to-hip incision with an incision around the belly button The most common abdominoplasty option; addresses skin, muscle separation and abdominal contour
Extended Loose skin that extends beyond the front of the abdomen to the hips and flanks Muscle repair included Longer low incision extending farther around the sides Removes more skin than a full tummy tuck and improves contour beyond the front of the belly
Fleur-de-lis Significant upper and lower abdominal skin laxity, often after massive weight loss Muscle repair included Low horizontal incision plus a vertical midline incision Tightens the abdomen vertically and horizontally when skin excess is not limited to the lower belly
Reverse Mild loose skin in the upper abdomen Skin only Incision hidden along the breast crease Pulls upper abdominal skin upward instead of downward
Drainless Patients who are candidates for abdominoplasty and want to avoid post-op drains when appropriate Muscle repair included Similar to a full or extended tummy tuck Uses progressive tension sutures to close the internal space between the skin/fat layer and muscle, eliminating the need for drains
Smart Tuck™ Patients who want comprehensive abdominal and waist contouring with PURE’s customized approach Muscle repair included Low horizontal incision; small liposuction and fat transfer access points PURE’s signature tummy tuck approach, combining abdominal tightening with strategic contouring, ab etching and fat transfer to the hips

How Long Do Tummy Tuck Results Last?

Tummy tuck results are considered long-lasting and, in most cases, permanent, because the removed skin and tissue do not come back. The contour you see at six months is the contour you keep, as long as your weight stays stable and you do not become pregnant after surgery.

Major weight gain, future pregnancy and natural aging can stretch the abdominal wall again over time. Maintenance is largely about staying close to your post-op weight, avoiding nicotine, protecting scars from sun exposure and following your surgeon's guidance once you are cleared for exercise.
