Achieve a contoured abdomen
You shouldn’t have to plan your wardrobe around loose abdominal skin.
If you’re tired of high-waisted leggings and shapewear, a tummy tuck can restore smoother, firmer contours and help you feel more confident in any clothing style. Also called abdominoplasty, this procedure addresses the changes that diet and exercise cannot fix after pregnancy or weight loss.
At PURE Plastic Surgery, abdominoplasty is performed by three double-board-certified surgeons and guided by our Smart Aesthetics™ philosophy: that the best results come from procedures that are planned around your anatomy and proportions, not a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical body contouring procedure that removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles to restore flatter, firmer contours. It is most often performed after pregnancy or weight loss to eliminate heavy, drooping skin and a stubborn “mommy pooch,” effectively reshaping the entire midsection.
Unlike liposuction, which targets fat alone, a tummy tuck addresses structural changes, including:
- Excess skin that hangs or drapes down
- Diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles)
- A lower belly bulge that doesn’t improve with diet and exercise
- Stretch marks below the navel
- Unwanted fat around the flanks and sides
- Rashes and irritation caused by loose, stretched skin
Abdominoplasty is personalized to your anatomy and goals, whether you need a mini tummy tuck for minor reshaping or an extended tummy tuck for loose skin that extends around the flanks and lower back. It can also be performed as a standalone procedure or combined with breast surgery as part of a comprehensive mommy makeover plan.

How Does a Tummy Tuck Reshape the Abdomen?
A tummy tuck does more than remove loose skin. It reshapes the abdomen by addressing the underlying structures that affect contour, firmness and support.
During a full tummy tuck, the layers of skin and fat are lifted so your surgeon can access the abdominal wall and repair the underlying muscles. This step is called muscle plication, and it works like an internal corset to flatten the belly. “We don’t cut your muscles,” Dr. Vidal explains. “We bring them back to the midline and suture them together to restore the integrity of the abdominal wall.” Once fully healed, many patients also notice a stronger core in addition to contour improvements.
After the muscle repair is complete, the skin is redraped over the tightened abdomen, excess skin is removed and the belly button is brought through a new opening. Liposuction is also used along the flanks to refine the waistline and improve the transition from the abdomen to the sides.
This layered approach is why a tummy tuck can improve concerns that liposuction, exercise and nonsurgical skin tightening cannot fully correct.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is ideal for patients who are bothered by loose skin and lower belly fullness that has not improved with diet and exercise. At PURE, abdominoplasty is suitable for both men and women who want a flatter, firmer midsection after pregnancy, bariatric surgery or major weight changes.
You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you:
- Are bothered by loose, hanging skin above or below the belly button
- Have weakened or separated abdominal muscles that cause the stomach to bulge
- Want to expand your wardrobe options without worrying about excess skin
- Are in good overall health with no medical problems that could complicate recovery
- Do not smoke, or are willing to quit before and after surgery for optimal healing
- Are at or near your weight loss goals with a BMI of 30 or less
- Don’t plan on becoming pregnant in the future
If your main concerns are loose skin, muscle separation and midsection contouring, abdominoplasty may offer the structural reset your body needs. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy and recommend the technique that can give you the smoothest, safest and most complete result.
What Are the Different Types of Tummy Tucks?
PURE Plastic Surgery offers a full range of abdominoplasty techniques, including the mini, full, extended, fleur-de-lis, drainless and Smart Tuck variations. The right approach depends on the amount of excess skin being removed, whether your abdominal muscles need repair, and how far your contouring needs extend beyond the front of the abdomen. For all tummy tucks except the mini, we include flank liposuction to avoid the “boxy” shape that often comes from pulling the tissues down without contouring the sides.

What Is a Mini Tummy Tuck?
A mini tummy tuck addresses loose skin below the belly button and uses a shorter incision than a full abdominoplasty. It doesn’t involve muscle repair and is designed for patients with mild lower abdominal laxity and a relatively flat upper belly. Usually, only specific patients are candidates for a mini tummy tuck, such as those with a small amount of skin remaining after a C-section.

What Is a Full Tummy Tuck?
A full tummy tuck is the most common version of abdominoplasty and addresses the entire midsection. It tightens loose skin above and below the belly button, repairs separated abdominal muscles and repositions the navel through a new opening in the tightened skin. Patients with diastasis recti after pregnancy, generalized skin laxity and a lower belly pooch are usually best served by a full tummy tuck.

What Is an Extended Tummy Tuck?
An extended tummy tuck removes extra skin from the entire abdominal area and extends laterally to the hips, flanks and part of your lower back. The abdominal muscles are also tightened. The incision will be longer than other options, and the recovery can take up to six weeks, but the tradeoff is more comprehensive improvement across the abdomen, flanks and lower torso.

What Is a Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck?
A fleur-de-lis tummy tuck adds a vertical incision to the horizontal one, allowing your surgeon to remove loose skin from side to side, not just top to bottom. This technique is generally reserved for patients with significant skin laxity following massive weight loss, where horizontal tightening alone would leave folds in the upper belly.

What Is a Reverse Tummy Tuck?
The reverse tummy tuck is for patients with extra skin in the upper abdomen, between the breasts and the belly button. Instead of pulling the skin down, like with traditional abdominoplasty, a reverse tummy tuck pulls the skin upward and hides the incision along the natural crease beneath the breasts. No muscle repair is involved.

What Is a Drainless Tummy Tuck?
A drainless tummy tuck is an advanced approach that uses progressive tension sutures to close the space between the skin and the muscle, eliminating the need for post-op drains. Dr. Garrett Wegerif is PURE's drainless tummy tuck specialist and one of the few surgeons in Miami performing this technique. “It lets patients skip the drain care routine and recover more comfortably,” Dr. Wegerif explains.

Which Tummy Tuck Is Right for Me?
Choosing the right tummy tuck starts with a simple question: How much skin laxity do you have, and where is it located? From there, your surgeon can determine whether you need a mini tummy tuck, standard tummy tuck, or a more specialized approach.
Your Tummy Tuck Roadmap
Do you have mild skin laxity and a flat upper abdomen?
If yes, you may be a candidate for a mini tummy tuck.
Do you have a lower belly bulge?
If yes, a full tummy tuck is usually the better fit because it can repair the abdominal muscles, remove excess skin and reposition the belly button.
Does your loose skin extend toward your hips, sides or lower back?
If yes, an extended tummy tuck can produce a more comprehensive result with smoother transitions throughout the midsection and waist.
Do you have loose skin in both the upper and lower abdomen?
If yes, a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck may be recommended because it tightens the abdomen both vertically and horizontally.
A tummy tuck is not one-size-fits-all. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy, including the amount of skin laxity present, the strength of your abdominal wall, and how much reshaping is needed throughout the entire torso to recommend the best approach for achieving your goals.
Do you want a full tummy tuck but prefer to avoid drains if you qualify?
If yes, ask about a drainless tummy tuck with Dr. Wegerif. This option uses progressive tension sutures to close the internal space where fluid can collect.

What Should I Expect at My Tummy Tuck Consultation?
A consultation is the first step in your tummy tuck journey, where you’ll meet with one of our care coordinators or double-board-certified plastic surgeons to determine candidacy and explore your options. At this time, you’ll also have the opportunity to review before-and-after photos, go over recovery expectations, and ask any questions you may have about your surgery.
During your consultation, be prepared to discuss:
- Your medical history, previous pregnancies, weight changes and goals
- Incision placement, recovery timeline and aftercare
- Pre-op requirements, including stopping smoking and lab work
- Travel planning, if flying into Miami from out of town
- Long-term maintenance of your results
To get the most out of your consultation, we recommend bringing:
- A list of medications and supplements you take
- Details of prior surgeries
- Questions about scars, recovery, childcare, work leave, and travel
- Reference photos if helpful for discussing goals
- A clear understanding of whether future pregnancies or weight loss are planned

What Happens During Tummy Tuck Surgery?
At PURE Plastic Surgery, abdominoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia in our Joint Commission-accredited facility in Miami, Florida. Your exact surgical plan will be customized to your anatomy, goals and the type of tummy tuck being performed, but most procedures follow the same general sequence. Here is what you can expect at each step:
- Incision placement: Your surgeon makes a horizontal incision in the lower abdomen, strategically placed so it can be easily concealed by undergarments and swimwear.
- Muscle repair: The skin and fat are elevated off the muscle layer, allowing your surgeon to repair separated abdominal muscles with internal sutures.
- Liposuction: Liposuction of the flanks is performed to improve overall contours, within the 1-liter limit set by the Florida Department of Health.
- Skin redraping: Excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is pulled downward and redraped over your newly tightened contours.
- Belly button repositioning: Your surgeon creates a new opening for your belly button and reattaches it to ensure a natural-looking result.
- Drains: Drains are placed, or progressive tension sutures are used to close the dead space.
- Pain management: Exparel, a long-acting local anesthetic, is offered to reduce the first 72 hours of post-op pain, making your recovery significantly more comfortable.
- Dressings: Dressings and compression garments are applied before you are brought to the recovery area, where you will be monitored before discharge.
Most cases take between two and four hours, depending on the technique used and whether your surgical plan includes other procedures, such as breast surgery or fat transfer. The drainless technique typically adds 20 to 40 minutes to operative time because of the progressive tension suture closure.
What Is Tummy Tuck Recovery Like?
Most patients return to desk work in about one week, light cardio at around four weeks, and full lifting around eight weeks after surgery. During your initial recovery, you can expect tightness in the abdomen, soreness, swelling, and limited mobility. Wearing your compression garments, walking, and getting your lymphatic massages promote healing while reducing post-operative risks and side effects.
Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline
Days 1 to 3. Soreness, swelling and a hunched posture are normal. At PURE, all patients go home with a small breathing device that makes it easier to take deep breaths, and the VenaPro, a portable compression sleeve that wraps around the calves and reduces the risk of blood clots. At this stage, abdominal binders are worn at all times, and short hourly walks are required.
Days 4 to 7. Discomfort becomes more manageable. Walking becomes easier. Your first post-op appointment is on day five, allowing your surgeon to assess your healing and address any concerns. If drains were placed, these may be able to come out after seven days, or when fluid output drops below 25 cc in a 24-hour period. Most patients feel ready to return to desk work after seven days.
Weeks 2 to 3. If drains were placed, both are out by this time. Once drains are removed, patients can transition from abdominal binders to a compression faja. Energy levels improve daily, and lymphatic massages begin to make a visible difference in swelling.
Week 4. Swelling continues to subside and light cardio becomes possible. As the muscles relax, posture also continues to straighten. Most patients are able to walk upright four weeks after surgery.
Weeks 6 to 8. Lifting restrictions ease. Patients are typically cleared to lift over 20 pounds. Final results begin to appear as swelling continues to subside, revealing a flatter, firmer midsection. Contour improvements continue to refine as the tissues settle into their new shape.
How Long Do Tummy Tuck Results Last?
Tummy tuck results are considered long-lasting and, in most cases, permanent, because the removed skin and tissue do not come back. The contour you see at six months is the contour you keep, as long as your weight stays stable and you do not become pregnant after surgery.
Major weight gain, future pregnancy and natural aging can stretch the abdominal wall again over time. Maintenance is largely about staying close to your post-op weight, avoiding nicotine, protecting scars from sun exposure and following your surgeon's guidance once you are cleared for exercise.

Can a Tummy Tuck Be Combined With Other Procedures?
Yes, tummy tucks are frequently combined with breast surgery, high-definition liposculpture or fat transfer to the hip dips when it is safe to do so. The most popular combination is the mommy makeover, a personalized surgical plan that adds breast augmentation, a breast lift or both to your abdominoplasty.
At PURE, common pairings include:
- Tummy tuck with breast surgery (mommy makeover)
- Tummy tuck with fat transfer to the hips and strategic liposuction (Smart Tuck)
- Tummy tuck with rib remodeling to further accentuate your curves
- Tummy tuck with breast surgery and an arm lift (the Trifecta Perfecta)
A tummy tuck and a Brazilian butt lift are not combined in the same operation at PURE. In Florida, liposuction is limited to 1 liter of fat removal when combined with an excisional procedure, which isn’t enough for a full BBL, and the recovery positions conflict: a tummy tuck requires lying on the back to protect the stomach, while a BBL requires staying off the buttocks to protect the transferred fat. If you’re considering both procedures, we recommend getting your tummy tuck first, then your BBL.

Why Patients Choose PURE for Tummy Tuck Surgery
The right tummy tuck depends as much on the surgeon as the technique. PURE Plastic Surgery is one of the few practices in Miami where three double-board-certified plastic surgeons offer three different tummy tuck approaches under one roof, each refined over years of specialized work.
Dr. S. Alexander Earle developed the Smart Tuck, a signature approach that combines abdominoplasty with strategic liposuction of the flanks, waist and axillary area, plus fat transfer to the hips to create a smooth hourglass figure. A double-board-certified plastic surgeon, he trained at Princeton, NYU and Duke, has served as President of the World Association of Gluteal Surgeons (WAGS) and is known for pioneering safer techniques throughout South Florida.
Dr. Natalia Vidal is a double board-certified plastic surgeon known for her precise scar and belly button work. She graduated at the top of her class at Ponce School of Medicine, completed two fellowships at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the University of Miami, and is one of the few female plastic surgeons in Miami performing complex body contouring procedures. Dr. Vidal has particular expertise in post-weight-loss body contouring, removing the loose skin that can hide a leaner shape through tummy tucks, arm lifts, circumferential body lifts and other skin excision procedures.
Dr. Garrett Wegerif is PURE’s drainless tummy tuck specialist. He uses dissolvable progressive tension sutures for a more comfortable recovery that allows patients to begin showering just two days after surgery. Dr. Wegerif is a double-board-certified plastic surgeon who served as chief resident during his general surgery training at Cleveland Clinic Florida, then completed a three-year residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of New Mexico.
All three surgeons operate in PURE's Joint Commission-accredited facility, the highest level of certification available for office-based surgery in the United States. Here, your tummy tuck is backed by serious credentials, surgical precision and a safety-first environment built for complex body contouring.
