How To Prepare for Breast Augmentation Recovery
The 411 On Breast Augmentation Recovery, Plus tips for organizing your life for surgery

When it comes to breast augmentation surgery, our Miami patients often ask “What can I do to speed up my breast augmentation recovery?” In today’s go, go, go society, it’s no wonder that this might be in the forefront of your mind. It’s important to worry about how fast you can get back to day-to-day activities like heading back to work or exercising. Like every surgery, there will be some downtime, but it’s probably a lot less than you think.

Let’s talk about the ways to prepare for your breast augmentation recovery and what you can expect during the recovery process.

QUICK REVIEW OF BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, helps increase the size and volume of the breasts. The procedure is usually performed by using breast implants to help give a more defined, projected look to the chest. The surgery is routinely performed in this country and worldwide.

TIPS FOR RECOVERY

You’ll most likely go home the same day as your surgery, unless you need to be monitored for any symptoms or if you’re having multiple procedures performed at the same time, such as a tummy tuck or breast lift with augmentation. The number one key important issue is to make sure you carve out enough time to take care of yourself after the procedure. Before your surgery, get ahead of the curve by getting a handle on the following life situations. That way, you won’t have to worry about them later.

  • Schedule someone to drive you to and from surgery and stay with you for the first 24 hours after your procedure
  • Set up a childcare provider who can help you for the first week after surgery, especially if you have smaller children that will need to be lifted.
  • Take time off of work so that you can recover in peace and focus on your healing.
  • Keep a calendar with all follow-up appointments listed
  • Get plenty of rest. Sleeping after surgery can be challenging for some people; you can find tips for sleeping after breast augmentation in our related blog post.
  • Set up a recovery zone in your home including soft pillows on the bed, warm blankets, magazines, media items, and fun-to-do’s like thank you cards or crossword puzzles

POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

You’ll feel the most pain on the day or so after your surgery, but overall you should have a smooth recovery after breast augmentation. It’s important that you follow the instructions from your surgeon during your recovery time.

You can expect the following instructions:
  • A wrap or healing bandage around your chest area to help healing and speed recovery
  • Do not wear an underwire bra for at least 2 months after surgery
  • Know where your stitches are and how to care for them. In certain cases, you may have a drain that needs to be removed or drained.
  • Don’t shower for 24 hours after your surgery

SWELLING & SIZE

You’ll have some swelling during recovery time so you may think your breasts look bigger or higher up than you wanted. Don’t worry! After a 3 months of healing, they will settle into their final look and you’ll love the way your new body feels.

RECOVERY TIME

As your body heals, you can begin to introduce normal activities about a week after recovery time.  This includes heading back to carpool to work or certain easy daily tasks. Do not lift anything for at least six weeks after surgery. Absolutely do not miss your follow-up appointment. It’s a crucial step in the recovery process so that your surgeon can make sure you’re healing properly.

THINGS TO REMEMBER WITH YOUR BREAST AUGMENTATION RECOVERY

Though you can be worried that the recovery after breast augmentation can be scary, the process is really a lot smoother than you might have previously thought. Preparing for your surgery with a great consultation and taking the steps to get organized before your surgery can keep everything in order as you heal. Don’t let the fear of recovery stop you from making a big change to your body that can inspire confidence for years to come. Trust us! You’ll be back to your regular routine in what will feel like barely anytime at all.
