South Beach Butt Lift vs. Traditional BBL: How the Results Differ

At PURE Plastic Surgery, we stay at the forefront of both technology and technique to bring our patients in Miami the best options. We have poured our love of innovation into our Brazilian butt lifts (BBLs). Our signature approach, known as the South Beach Butt Lift (SoBeBL), is more precise than a traditional BBL and was developed for lower BMI patients.

If you’re technically a candidate for both procedures, you might be wondering: how do the results differ, and which one is right for me? We’re here to break down those differences and help you make a confident, informed decision!

What a Traditional BBL Is Designed to Do

A traditional Brazilian butt lift prioritizes shape and volume. Fat is harvested from donor areas like the hips, thighs or abdomen, processed, and carefully injected into the buttocks to add fullness and projection. The results can be significant, and for patients who want a more dramatically enhanced silhouette, it may be exactly what they're looking for.

To achieve this look, traditional BBLs involve multiple incision points around the body: some in the donor area, and some in the buttocks to place the harvested fat. While these incisions are small and tend to heal well, they can still be a concern for patients, especially if they want to show off their new proportions on Miami Beach in a low-cut bikini.

How Do the Results of the SoBeBL Differ?

The SoBeBL is Dr. Earle's signature approach, and the name gives a nod to where PURE calls home: South Beach in Miami, Florida. The technique shares the same foundation as a traditional BBL, liposuction followed by fat transfer, but several key elements set it apart.

Fewer Incisions, Strategically Placed

The SoBeBL uses fewer entry points than a typical BBL, and they're placed in locations designed to stay hidden even in a small bikini. Most often, that means a single incision in the upper back and another below the bikini line, leaving almost no visible trace. With proper aftercare (like protecting your incision sites from sun exposure!), no one will be able to tell that your newly enhanced contours are the result of a surgical procedure.

A Focus on Shape Over Volume

Here's the real distinction: the SoBeBL isn't trying to maximize the amount of fat transferred. It's focused on where that fat goes and the effect it has on your silhouette. This is what makes it such a good option for lower BMI patients who don’t have a lot of natural fat to harvest. Rather than being injected for all-over augmentation, the fat is layered with precision to address specific areas or concerns, like projection, hip dips, and the transition between the waist and back. This way, even moderate volume in the right locations creates beautiful, subtly enhanced results.

Proportion as the Starting Point

Before a SoBeBL, our surgeons evaluate each patient's existing anatomy, including waist width, hip structure and lower back contour, and use those measurements as the foundation for the surgical plan. The philosophy here is Smart Aesthetics™: the idea that results should make sense for your body, not a standardized idea of what a butt lift should look like.

A traditional BBL can absolutely be performed with this level of care and attention to proportion. At PURE, all BBLs, traditional or SoBeBL, are approached with that mindset. The difference is that the SoBeBL's technique was specifically engineered around it.

How Much Fat Is Transferred With Each Procedure?

With a traditional BBL, surgeons typically transfer anywhere from 800 to 1200 cc of fat per buttock, sometimes more depending on the patient's anatomy and goals. That volume is what drives the more dramatic projection and fullness associated with the procedure.

The SoBeBL works with considerably less. Because it's designed for patients with lower BMIs and less available fat, transfers tend to be more modest, often in the range of 200 to 400 cc per side. The emphasis isn't on how much goes in, but on where it goes, to create meaningful changes even with a smaller volume of fat.

How the Results Compare Side by Side

A traditional BBL and a SoBeBL can both produce beautiful outcomes, but they tend to look different.

Traditional BBL results offer more volume and projection, which works well for patients who have sufficient fat to harvest and want noticeably enhanced buttocks. The silhouette change is more pronounced, and results are often more dramatic immediately post-recovery.

SoBeBL results tend to read as a natural evolution of the patient's existing shape. The enhancement is real, but it's integrated. Someone who didn't know you had surgery might assume you've been doing a lot of hip-targeting workouts. That "did she or didn't she?" quality is, for many patients, the whole point.

So Which One Is Right for You?

This is a decision best made in consultation with your surgeon, because the answer genuinely depends on your anatomy, your goals and the amount of available donor fat.

What's worth knowing is that at PURE, neither approach is pushed as the default. Both are tools, and the right one is whichever produces the most balanced, proportionate outcome for you as an individual. That might be a traditional BBL. It might be the SoBeBL. In some cases, it might be something else entirely, like off-the-shelf fat transfer with Alloclae.

The best surgeons aren't advocates for one technique above all others. They're advocates for results that make sense for the person in front of them.
