What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammaplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can enhance the size and volume of your breasts by using breast implants to craft your desired breast size and shape. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Alexander Earle will consult closely with you for a goal that gives symmetry to the breast and increased volume while also taking into account the natural proportion of your unique body.

Miami breast augmentation can be performed using breast implants (either silicone or saline) that are placed under the breast tissue or chest muscles. It can also be performed using fat transfer, or fat grafting, for less dramatic but permanent results without the use of artificial implants. Finally, breast augmentation is often performed at the same time as a breast lift, which can restore the youthful perkiness of the breasts.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation (non-implant augmentation)

If you’re not interested in using breast implants, a different type of breast augmentation surgery uses fat transfer to provide naturally beautiful results. This plastic surgery takes the fat retrieved from a liposuction procedure and places it in the breasts to increase shape and volume. Popular areas treated with liposuction include the thighs, hips, and abdomen, providing a double benefit to breast augmentation by removing stubborn fat from other problem areas around the body.

Although the results of these breast augmentations will yield a smaller increase in size and a more natural overall look, the results are permanent because the augmentation material comes from your own body. Fat transfer breast augmentation is sometimes referred to as a “natural breast augmentation.”

Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift

Many women wish to both increase the size of their breasts and lift them to a higher, more youthful position. This is especially common among women who develop sagging or deflated-looking breasts after pregnancy or dramatic weight loss.

To achieve both a fuller shape and lifted appearance, a breast augmentation can be combined with a breast lift. This can further improve the self-esteem of women seeking Miami breast augmentation by creating a youthful and flattering appearance through a single surgery.

Women interested in combining breast augmentation and a breast lift can discuss their goal results with Dr. Earle during their consultation appointment to see if this is the best option for them.

Do I have choices for the look I want?

There are many choices available for breast implant surgery, all of which Dr. Earle will go over with you during your breast augmentation consultation. You’ll need to consider the type of implant that will achieve your desired results and how each type work with your body and the result you wish to see after surgery. Your surgeon will go over the best options that are available for you.

First, breast measurements will be taken to understand the size your breasts will be able to reach and how they will work with your body type. Your surgeon will also explain the importance of knowing how far the breasts will project out from the chest and which breast implants can give you the best chance at your preferred look. Your breast augmentation results can be customized by choosing between various breast implant types, implant placements, and implant sizes. These options will all be discussed during your initial consultation.

What are my options?

There are several different breast implant options you’ll want to consider before surgery. You’ll want to take into account the type, size, and fillers you’ll want in your implants.

Filler Materials

Your surgeon will explain the difference between saline and silicone breast implants and what that means for your outcome. Generally, silicone implants provide a more natural look and feel, while saline implants give a bolder, rounder look. All implants are made with an outer layer of silicone. Non-cohesive silicone implants may be more hazardous than saline implants in the case of a leak or rupture, as saline tends to be safer for your body should a break occur.

Both silicone breast implants and saline breast implants can help inspire confidence in your body shape. Choosing between saline or silicone often simply comes down to personal preference. There is also a difference in the way they feel and their cost. Silicone breast implants often are more natural-looking and feeling compared to saline, but saline implants are typically less expensive.

Location of the Incision & Implant

You’ll also want to consider where the breast implant will be inserted. Most implants are inserted through an incision on the underneath part of the breast at the crease. This is called an inframammary technique. They may also be inserted through an incision in the inferior portion of the areola or placed under or over the chest muscles. The implant can be placed either above (subglandular) or below (submuscular) the pectoralis major muscle.

A majority of the implants are placed beneath the chest muscle, leaving the implant less visible and less prone to imperfections. Placement above the chest muscle is often preferred for patients who already have a significant amount of natural breast tissue to avoid the implants’ appearance being affected by movement in the chest muscle. If you’re interested in a fat transfer for your augmentation, you’ll undergo liposuction, probably from your abdomen area that will be inserted back into your breasts.

To get the correct look, the silicone layer of the implant is filled with a silicone gel that gives a natural feel and texture while remaining extremely durable. Implants filled with saline are adjustable to the size and style that you want but they have a more rounded and less natural appearance. Other types of shapes available for your implant are as follows:

Types Of Implants

Dr. Earle knows that when it comes to breast augmentation in Miami, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Each person has their own unique body shape and goals, which means a personalized approach to breast enhancement is the best way to achieve patients’ results. During your consultation with Dr. Earle, he will explain which implant shape and size is best suited for your ideal breast volume and breast tissue condition.

Round Implants

A great option for sagging breasts, the round implant will give a larger projection and are the most common type of implants selected. Several different types of round implants can work for your body shape.

Teardrop Implants

Often the best choice for a completely natural look, teardrop implants are fuller at the bottom and smaller at the top.

Smooth Implants

These implants are soft and moveable. They give the appearance of moving as you move, leading to a more natural feel and look.

Textured Implants

These implants develop scar tissue to adhere to the implant which makes them less likely to move around after they’re secured.

Highly Cohesive Silicone Gel Implants / Gummy Bear Implants

Also known as gummy bear breast implants, these types of breast implants are highly textured and have a highly cohesive gel that makes up the implant. These implants hold their shape even if they have no outer silicone shell. In addition, these modern generation implants achieve a very natural look and feel. If they do move out of place or experience capsular contracture, implant removal surgery will be needed to correct the deformity.

Am I A Good Candidate For Breast Implants?

You’ll want to consider breast augmentation surgery if you’re unhappy with your current breast shape, size, or symmetry. You might be recovering from a mastectomy due to breast cancer, need to restore lost fat from pregnancy and breastfeeding, or just be unhappy with the size of your breasts. These are all reasons to consider breast augmentation.

Because your breasts can continue to grow throughout your 20s, you must be 18 or older to receive saline implants and older than 22 to receive silicone implants. If breast sagging or drooping is the main concern, you’ll want to have a breast lift in conjunction with your breast augmentation to get the desired result. Anyone who wants to feel more confident, have better breast projection and a fuller, more rounded breast shape is a great candidate for breast augmentation.

Overall, candidates for breast augmentation will have breasts of a smaller size, have uneven breasts or have breasts that have become unstructured after pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What Should I Expect At My Breast Augmentation Consultation?

Before choosing who will do your surgery, make sure to find a fully-trained surgeon that is well-versed in breast augmentation surgery. You’ll want a caring and competent team to help you get the right results. This will help make sure you get your desired outcome and reduce unwanted errors. Your plastic surgeon will meet with you in person before doing your surgery.

During this meeting, your surgeon will listen to your wishes and examine your breasts to see if your desired result can be achieved. Your team will take measurements of your body shape and current breast positioning. You’ll also see pictures of different types of procedures and outcomes. During your consultation, you should be prepared to answer questions about your general health, as your surgeon will need to confirm that you are healthy enough for surgery. This includes information regarding past surgeries, medications or supplements, relevant allergies, and whether or not you are a smoker.

If you will benefit from surgery, your doctor will walk you through the expected results you can expect to achieve from surgery. You’ll also walk through the procedure, learn what to expect from surgery, choose the right implants for your breasts, and be given the chance to ask any necessary questions that you may have.

Make sure to bring a list of important questions and information that you want to ask your surgeon so that you don’t forget to ask them while considering all your options. At Pure Plastic Surgery, there’s an exciting opportunity to see a 3D image of your after results even before your surgery. This will give you a glimpse at the results you can expect.

What Will Happen Before, During, And After My Surgery?

Once you’re considered a candidate for breast augmentation, you’ll be given instructions to follow before the day of your surgery. Make sure to follow these instructions closely as not to hold up or delay your surgery time or day. You’ll most likely have your breast augmentation in a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center instead of a hospital and you’ll likely be able to go home the very same day after your procedure.

Your breast augmentation procedure will be performed under general anesthesia to prevent you from feeling any pain. Your surgery will be performed and you’ll be monitored until you wake up from anesthesia and can go home. You will have to have someone drive you home from surgery and present for your recovery at home for at least the first 24 to 48 hours.

Before and after your surgery, you should avoid smoking or taking blood-thinning medications as these can interfere with the healing process and your results. You may also be required to complete medical exams or blood tests ahead of your surgery date to confirm that you are in good health overall. Your surgeon will provide thorough instructions for you regarding healing after your breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

You can expect a good recovery after breast augmentation surgery, but you’ll want to craft some time to heal and give yourself a period of rest. After breast augmentation, it may take at least a week before you’re able to resume any normal activities. You may want to schedule any time off of work ahead of your surgery because it may take up to two weeks to recover. However, some patients can return to work about a week after their surgery.

During your recovery, you’ll want to keep your breasts wrapped with a bandage and supported with a special bra while you heal and avoid underwire bras for up to 8 weeks after surgery. If you have stitches, you’ll see your doctor to have them removed and check on your healing. Your doctor will give you exact instructions for rest and recovery time, as well as the proper instructions for taking care of your breasts after surgery. You’ll most likely be able to shower 24 hours after surgery but will need someone present with you during that initial recovery time. Patients should typically avoid exercise or other strenuous activity for up to two weeks following their surgery, but your surgeon will give you specific instructions after your post-operative appointment.

Results, Maintenance & Follow up

Once your healing begins, you’ll be excited to see the first signs of your new breasts. At first, you may think your breasts are higher than expected but it will take six to eight weeks for your breasts to settle into their permanent location. Do not wear an underwire bra during this time. You’ll want to make sure to follow-up with your doctor to make sure your healing is on track and that everything looks great with your results.

You’ll want to continue to have follow-up appointments at least every 3 years to ensure your implants are holding up well and that you don’t have any other symptoms or complications.

How Much Does A Breast Augmentation Cost?

The final cost of your breast augmentation will vary depending on factors including the type and size of breast implant you have chosen, the techniques used to complete your procedure, where your surgery was performed, and your cosmetic surgeon’s experience and expertise. In Miami, Florida, a breast augmentation typically costs between $4,500 and $8,500. A more specific cost estimate for your breast augmentation procedure will be explained after you consult with Dr. Earle.
