What are breast implants?

Breast implants are a prosthesis that comes in the form of two fluid-filled bags. They are used to add shape and volume during breast augmentation surgery and during other types of implant surgeries. The gel-like breast implants are placed under or in place of your natural breasts. Breast implants are added to the body during surgery called breast augmentation, also known as, augmentation mammoplasty.

What are my implant options?

There are several different options you’ll want to consider before surgery. Silicone and saline implants are the most widely known options available. A new implant, known as the “Gummy Bear” breast implant, is also a great option to explore thanks to its added durability.

1. Silicone Implants

The outer layer of all implants is made of silicone. The inside of a silicone implant is filled with a silicone gel that gives a natural feel and texture while still remaining durable. Silicone implants have a very natural look and a softer feel.

2. Saline Implants

These implants are filled with saline and are adjustable to the size and style that you want. They have a more rounded and less natural appearance but are safer for your body should a leak occur.

3. Gummy Bear Implants

Also known as highly cohesive silicone gel implants; these gummy bear implants have a highly cohesive gel that makes up the inside of the implant. These implants hold their shape even if they have no outer silicone shell. This idea is revolutionizing breast implants because their high level of durability means they may be less likely to leak as opposed to their more gel-like counterparts. They are a firm and durable choice for your breast surgery.

Important things to consider with breast implants

When considering which one to choose, you’ll want to go for the one that most closely matches the size and feel that you’re looking for while also considering the way you want your implant to feel and the cost you’re willing to spend. Here are a few other options to consider:

To get the correct look, your surgeon will explain the importance of knowing how far the breasts will project out from the chest and what that means for getting the right look. Other important aspects of size and shape for your implant are as follows:

A great option for sagging breasts, the round implant will give larger projection and are the most common type of implants selected. There are several different types of round implants that can work for your body type.

Teardrop Implants

The best choice for a natural look, teardrop implants are fuller at the bottom and smaller at the top.

Smooth Implants

These implants are soft and moveable. They give the appearance of moving as you move, leading to a more natural feel and look.

Textured Implants

These implants develop scar tissue to adhere to the implant which makes them less likely to move around after they’re secured.

Am I a candidate for breast implants?

Anyone who wants to feel more confident, have better breast projection and a fuller, more rounder breast shape is a great candidate for breast implants. Because your breasts can continue to grow throughout your 20s, you must be 18 or older to receive saline implants and older than 22 to receive silicone implants. Candidates for breast implants will have breasts of a smaller size, have uneven breasts or have breasts that have become unstructured after pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What should I expect at my breast implant consultation?

Before having breast implants, it’s imperative that you have a consultation to understand all of your options for breast implants and surgery. During your consultation, your surgeon will listen to your wishes and examine your breasts to see if your desired result can be achieved. If you will benefit from surgery, your doctor will walk you through the expected results you can expect to achieve from getting breast implants. You’ll also learn about the key details of your procedure, learn what to expect from surgery, choose the right implants for your breasts and be given the chance to ask any necessary questions that you may have. You’ll also view pictures of different types of implants and get an idea of the expected outcome after surgery.

What will happen before, during and after my surgery?

After meeting with your surgeon, you’ll be given instructions to follow the day before your surgery. These are very important as neglecting them could mean your surgery would need to be moved to another day. Follow the pre-instructions carefully. You’re surgery can be performed in an outpatient surgery center or a hospital. The good news is you’ll likely be able to go home the very same day.

During your procedure, you can expect to be given a general anesthesia which will prevent you from feeling any pain. Your implants will be inserted through an incision. Most implants are inserted through an incision on the underneath part of the breast at the crease. This is called an inframammary technique. They may also be inserted through an incision in the inferior portion of the areola or placed under or over the chest muscles. Your surgeon will discuss the best manner for your specific case before your surgery takes place.

Immediately after the procedure you will be monitored until you wake up from anesthesia and are able to go home. You will have to have someone drive you home from surgery and be present with you at least during the first day of recovery at home.

After your procedure, you’ll be given instructions for your recovery which might include pain management, healing and looking for certain side effects.

Possible Side Effects to beware of include:

-excessive bleeding and bruising

-redness and excessive pain

-leaking of fluid

-swelling or infection

-scar tissue

-movement of the implant

Right after surgery, you’ll need to schedule a week or two to rest and recover before resuming any normal daily activities. An important part of your care will be wrapping your breasts with a bandage and supported with a special bra while you heal. If you have stitches or sutures, you’ll see your doctor to remove them and check on your healing. Your doctor will give you exact instructions for rest and recovery time, as well as the other instructions for taking care of your breasts after surgery and throughout the following years.

Results, Maintenance & Follow up

After healing, you’ll notice the first signs of successful breast implants. It will take up to eight weeks for the final outcome to be revealed. If you’re implants are higher than expected, don’t worry. They’ll settle down during the first six to eight week period. Make sure to follow-up with your doctor to ensure your healing is on track and that everything looks great with your results. You’ll want to continue to have follow-up appointments at least every 3 years to ensure your implants are holding up well and that you don’t have any other symptoms or complications.
