How Long After Pregnancy Can I Have a Mommy Makeover?

Having a baby is a grand life-event that can bring about major changes to a woman’s body that are amazing and sometimes disappointing. We have all seen photos of celebrities who bounce back immediately after surgery and even some friends who make post-pregnancy look easy. However, everyone has a unique pregnancy journey and for some women, one pregnancy can deplete their confidence and change the way they feel about their bodies.

For those who choose to have a Mommy Makeover, they often ask how long they need to wait after having a baby. The medical answer is to wait six (6) months after giving birth to undergo major surgery, however it’s best to consult with your surgeon and primary care doctor to decide the best time for you.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is surgery for mothers who want to restore their body after pregnancy. For those who want a slimmer waistline, more youthful breasts and an overall slimmer body after having one or multiple babies, this may be the perfect procedure. A mommy makeover is a combination of procedures that typically include tummy tuck, breast augmentation and liposuction. For some, it may have to be performed in stages depending on the patient’s goals and the state of Florida’s medical guidelines.

When can I have my Mommy Makeover?

After giving birth, the mind and body need time to rest and recover from the stress a pregnancy and delivery can cause. We suggest waiting at least six (6) months after delivery to have a Mommy Makeover. For some the six (6) months is all they will need to be cleared for surgery and for others, it may take more time. When we discuss Mommy Makeovers with patients, we consider whether they plan to have more children, whether they are at their ideal weight and whether they plan to breast feed.

Can I have a Mommy Makeover if I plan to have more children?

If you are planning to have more children, then we suggest you wait until you’ve completed your family through pregnancy to have a Mommy Makeover. While you can still become pregnant, breast feed and perform all of the necessary functions during and after pregnancy once you’ve had a Mommy Makeover, additional pregnancies can dramatically change the results of the surgery.

Should I have a Mommy Makeover if I am not at my ideal weight?

After pregnancy many women focus on the “snapback” – quickly returning to their pre-pregnancy weight. Exercise and diet changes can help return the body to your ideal weight, but some patients look to surgery to solve their weight problems. While surgery can remove pounds, it is best to be stabilized at your ideal weight – or close to it – prior to your Mommy Makeover. Additional weight loss after the surgery can cause lose skin and fat to appear in new places resulting in changes in the post-surgery body.

Can I have a Mommy Makeover if I am still breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding is directly tied to hormone regulation and the body’s milk production can continue to affect the size and shape of the breasts. If you are breastfeeding, we recommend postponing any breast surgery until six (6) months after you are finished breast feeding.
